In the here and now, you need a conference network to be taken seriously.
When the ACC, B1G, SEC, and Pac all have their own conference networks, the lack of one for the Big 12 is a major problem. Perhaps in the future it won't matter so much, but right now it matters.
But I'm not sure it would even be possible for the Big 12 to start a traditional cable channel now. I highly doubt ESPN would be willing to partner with them. Maybe Fox would, but Fox has been weakened by Disney since they bought out a lot of their TV assets. And trying to build a conference network on their own without a partner would probably fail, as the Pac-12 has shown how difficult it is to do that.
