Even if NC is ranked 9th, it doesn't change that the state probably
only should have 2 power conference schools particular when you factor in there are states who are ranked higher than NC and only have 2 power conference schools. I don't think anyone is interested in increasing the number in those states because there is no compelling need to do so especially if the 2 that already exist are satisfying the needs within the state.
In some cases, the state may only have 1 or 1.5 power conference schools. The .5 is in reference to the "power conference" label being an arbitrary one given that the power conferences have their own criteria to decide whether a non-power conference school is worthy of being considered a power conference quality for scheduling purposes. For example some power conferences consider Navy to be a power conference opponent. I think a couple 1 or 2 consider Army to be a power conference opponent. However, no one considers Air Force to be a power conference opponent. Is there really that much difference between the 3 academy schools? All it does is show that the "power conference" label is nothing more than a self-appointed label. that really doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things.
