Even though Duke is a considered a "blue blood" in basketball,

I am not sure it is really "power conference" material. At least, Duke basketball post Coach K may end up in a similar state as Indiana basketball post Bobby Knight and Arizona basketball post Lute Olsen. If the state of NC were to reduce the number of power conference schools down to 2, then I would think NC State has a better chance of surviving than Duke for the following reasons:

1. Public vs. private school
2. Larger alumni base (Note fan base may be a little tricky because a lot of Duke "fans" may really be fair weather fans)
3. Greater potential to have more capital to invest in and develop the athletic program (i.e. state/public funding vs. private funding)
