What did the ACC lose by adding ND to the conference for 2020 only?
The ACC got 10 games with ND last season. The entire "ND Saturday" on NBC was against ACC teams. And the ACC TV package added 5 games with ND that they otherwise would not have had - increasing the value of the inventory. The ACCCG included ND and was a rematch of the very highly rated Clemson @ ND regular season matchup.
The one year experiment exposed ND to what life in the ACC is like. They had a home game with #2 Clemson that had conference and national playoff implications. They had a road game against #13 UNC. And the ACCCG rematch with #2 Clemson. And they also got Duke and Louisville and Syracuse, etc. The ND fans got the experience of playing for a conference championship.
For the ACC, the conference got the best of all outcomes. ND made the ACCCG and was nationally relevant all year. And ND did not win the conference - which would have been embarrassing.
The Alternative? ACC turns it's back on ND and ND sits out the season or plays a G-5 schedule (since the Power 5 conferences played no OOC games). No double-OT nationally televised thriller in South Bend vs. Clemson. The ACCCG is a Clemson drubbing of UNC. And believe me, ND would have noticed the snub.
The ACC did the absolutely right thing.
