I've known quite a few naval officers, and none cite Navy football
as a recruiting tool. I doubt USNA recruiting is affected much by Navy football. The 1,000 or so Annapolis grads is a relatively small part of the Navy's officer corps, and USNA could recruit just as well by advertising during an SEC, ACC etc. game. Plus, the Merchant Marine Academy and Coast Guard Academy are highly sought after without any real athletics exposure.
And it's just hard to imagine enlisted recruiting being affected by USNA football.
There might be a group of athletes that are prototype future officers that are attracted to Navy football, but I'd bet those kids would enroll regardless of Navy's athletic status. Remember the USNA is not a path to professional sports - you've got a long stretch of mandatory service to do.
If I really wanted to recruit Navy officers, I'd run an ad showing SEC campuses - along with resident coeds - and pitch ROTC scholarships to the schools of those coeds. The Navy would run out of boats before running out of officers. [Post edited by lawhokie at 08/23/2021 5:05PM]
