For instance, at present the ACC can't vote to increase ND's game commitment to 8 or 9.
That number is set between parties in a contract.
But, if ND was a member, the ACC could vote to increase conference games to 9 or even 10.
ND would be stuck in that situation. Too bad, majority rules.
Last year, the ACC's Covid rules meant that ND could not play Navy at Annapolis.
ND and Navy were good to go, but a conference rule prevented it.
So, those are the kinds of things ND wants to avoid by being an independent.
It also means having dedicated 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon football telecasts, coast to coast.
If it is sharing time with other conference members and other conferences on ABC and/or ESPN or CBS, it would not likely have those dedicated time slots.
ND people do not trust conferences to have ND's best interests in mind. So, it wants to control the program as much as possible.
