Here's the problem: College Basketball kinda sucks now.
Other than the NCAAT there is no deep drama to the regular season and the lame everybody-gets-in major conference tournaments.
Plus, the product is much worse.
One-and-done players, the NBA going more international for players, conference realignment, transfer portals, have all made the college game weaker.
When I watch the NBA Draft, most of the first round players I hardly even recognize. Once we do have a legit star in the game, they leave right away (Zion).
If you go back to drafts from a few decades ago, most the top players in the draft were household names.
The '80s when the Big East and the ACC were so awesome, there was massive excitement about the sport. I respect what Coach Bennett has done at UVa (he truly has done it right). But that title team would have gotten trounced by any of about 8 different Big East and ACC schools in any given year in the eighties.
And the NBA is basically drafting projects (see Ben Simmons). Sadly, the development is happening in the NBA, not in college.
Magic Johnson won a title as a rookie, and played center in the title clinching game when Kareem was out. Doubt he does that if he were a one-and-done. He was NBA ready when he showed up.
