Bosch fans: Help me understand Maddie

I have hung with it and am mid-season 5. Every show has some scenes with Maddie alone. Right now she is flirting with some dude while on internship. Why do these scenes exist? Who watches a show for Bosch, and wants to see teen story? Did viewers like her? TIA.
