It was a mistake because they could have won the conference as a non-member


I agree ND earned it on the field.
But if you have a non-member win the league, the league looks weak.

Unrelated example: UFC vs bellator MMA companies
If a bellator fighting champion crosses over and wins the ufc championship immediately. Bellator can brag that their fighters are better than ufc fighters bc their former fighter won ufc championship.
So instead, Dana white (ufc) always matches the newly signed bellator fighters vs very tough ufc fighters in their first ufc fight so they lose.


If notre dame won the acc they could have used that as leverage/ bragging rights over the ACC for the next decade. “Why should we join Acc. We already won it in our first try.”
