The catcher should never have to yield if making a legitimate play


Has to entail not just fielding the ball but a tag on the runner. It's a judgment call at that point. Sounds like umps are taking the easy way out. And yes, if a catcher realizes the play won't be made, get out of the base path or from the plate. Most will, and probably should, risk the obstruction. Nothing to lose.
