Why is everyone focused on increasing size?

There are currently 64 P5 schools, plus independent ND and BYU. That is a perfect number for 6 P5 conferences with 11 schools each.

You get round robin play, a nice clean structure for expanded playoffs, and the ability to create a new conference (lots of money can be tied to that marketing angle).

So why the rush to expand using G5 schools that don't easily fit?
