Here's My Game Recap Story
The jinx is broken.
The #20 Virginia Tech Hokies opened the ACC softball tournament with a 4-1 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The win snaps a 6 game winning streak by Notre Dame over the Hokies and makes only the second VT win over the Irish in their last 20 matchups.
The Hokies wasted no time jumping on Irish starter Senior Alexis Holloway, who has had the Hokies number recently, having given up only 4 earned runs in the 31.2 innings that she has pitched against VT.
In the first inning, Kelsey Brown led off with a single and scored on Cameron Fagan’s triple to right center. Alexis Milius then plated Fagan to give the Hokies a 2-0 first inning cushion. The Hokies chased Holloway in the second when Darby Trull doubled to left center, scoring Addy Greene, who had walked and stolen second.
The Irish got on the board against Keely Rochard in the fourth, scoring an unearned run after a Hokie fielding error, but the Hokies got the run back in the bottom of the frame on a Emma Ritter triple.
Rochard made it stand up, surrendering on 4 hits on the day and striking out 7. But she wasn’t particularly satisfied by either her performance or that of her team. “We still have a lot more that we can get better at,” said Rochard after the game. “But the good thing is that we haven't really peaked…we're on our way there."
"I never, ever sensed any nervousness in my players today," said Coach Pete D’Amour in his postgame remarks. “I didn’t have to motivate them – they were just ready to go.”
“Keely just did her thing. When mixes her pitches like she did today, it makes it hard to just sit on one thing. She did a good job today.”
Up next on Friday is a game with regular season champion Clemson (41-5). During Pod Play earlier this year, the Hokies won dropped the first game of the series 8-1 before rebounding with two wins on Friday by scores of 9-0 (5 inning run-rule) and 4-1.
I have my Clemson thoughts and the tale of the tape up later tonight.
Good job, Hokies!
