Attended tonight's game.
My take is VT did a much better job placing the ball on the draw and the VT circle players had great position on the ball all night. And in other cases we simply out hustled UVA. At one point we had a 16-2 advantage on draws. This is an almost unheard of advantage in women's lacrosse.
Draw controls set the tone early tonight and allowed us to take 12 more shots than UVA. This combination got us out to a quick start and up 6-0 almost before you could blink. Paige Petty had 6 girls and played much more like years past. Emma Crooks was great on the draw and I think added 4 goals. These two are leaders on the team and stepped up in a big way tonight. Overall, our shooting percentage seemed much better in this game. This made a big difference.
VT seemed to just want it more. They won the battle of the 50/50 balls. In some cases VT was the beneficiary of some good bounces. All this combined for the best game I have seen from VT in the past several years. We dominated in most facets of tonight's game.
There is not much more we could have asked of the VT players. If I had to pick one thing out it would be our goaltending. Our goalies continued their struggles..Combined they had about a 25% save percentage. This will not cut it against Syracuse this week.
Despite the weather it was a great evening of lacrosse. Hokies were well-represented in the stands. My daughter would love to play for VT and got to see her first VT game in person. We went down with a club teammate who hopes to play for UVA. Fun night all around and glad it went the Hokies way.
Good luck to the Hokies in the ACC tournament. If we play like we did last night and improve our goalie play VT will be a tough out.
