Not aggressive enough on base paths. Look at ND. They manufacture runs.

When you are slumping at the plate (as we are), you have to be of the mindset that if you get a runner on, she is going to find a way to score. The squeeze we did today was beautiful—meant to trade a run for an out and instead we got 2 runs and no outs from it. Sure, that won’t happen every time but the reality is you want opposing catchers throwing the ball around. They are going to make mistakes.

The color analyst on ESPN U even said she was surprised how “tethered” to the base VT’s runners are. They do not take any chances. The way I read it is, Pete does not trust them to get the job done on a steal attempt. But we also had a situation with that wild pitch in the 9th where the ball squirted off into foul territory and our runner did not advance. You are running there 100% of the time. Make them throw it. Had she been on 2nd instead of first, she probably doesn’t get doubled up to end the game on Trull’s hard liner because the shortstop wouldn’t have been able to get over to cover 2nd base fast enough.

And Pete even makes substitutions to get speedsters on base. Let them do their thing!
