... the largest naval battle of WW2, and probably the largest in history. It was also the last battle in naval history in which battleships opposed battleships.

The Battle of Surigao Strait was just one part of the overall engagement, which involved three separate Japanese fleets (two of which were performing suicidal decoy duty). Under the IJN attack plan, the remaining fleet was supposed to reach the Leyte landing sites unopposed due to the decoy actions.

It almost worked.
