Oh, I believe that, I was there in the 70sand I too was kinda shocked
as a NOVA person seeing Appalachian poor whites. heck, white guys doing the garbage trucks or as maids. One strange thing I saw was a woman wearing an elaborate dress, went and set up on the sidewalk near where the bookstore is pulled up a ring in her dress (not what you think) and proceeded to do a puppet show with the stage being this this cylinder of cloth going above her head. A nearby cop I suspect let her collect tips for a while before shooing her off, but, where did that come from? out of some holler somewhere, straight from the last century.
I suspect HLL was lying about the log cabins though, even in the early frontier they weren't permanent, you'd build one for shelter when you first arrived on some land but once you got your first crop you'd set about building a real house. No log cabin would have survived for long and so yeah, I don't doubt those hollers w/really poor people were around in the 30s but even then I doubt there were any log cabins remaining or people building newer ones.
Having said that, there was a farmhouse near where I lived growing up in Fairfax County that had one room that was a "log cabin" supposedly used by Lord Fairfax way back when. [Post edited by `lag at 04/18/2021 09:27AM]
