I know what you're talking about, but there is a huge difference.
The BE had a bunch of schools that didn't play football, and didn't want to expand the football side of the conference. They were a bunch of "mid-major" schools in a P6 conference. Something had to break.
Everyone in the ACC plays football...some just don't care enough about it to invest for success.
I wonder what would have happened to the Big East conference if the non-football schools would have broken away from the "all sports" schools in the 90s. Would the ACC been able to raid the Big East? Frankly I thought BE football had a better product on the field than ACC football around the turn of the century. The ACC had F$U and....no one else. The Big East had a bunch of hard nosed teams that played a "tough" brand of football. You better tighten that chin strap when you stepped on the field in the BE back then...
