varies by sport. In basketball, I think high schools are very important and the portal is to supplement/add that missing piece(s) that can give you a shot to go all the way. In football, for all but the blue bloods, the transfer portal is becoming a much more viable option for talent. You generally get older, more mature, developed kids versus the projection work involved in high school kids and how they might adapt. The portal is absolutely becoming more important all the way around IMO, however, the impact on recruiting HS players varies depending upon the sport.
