I don't think you will see the Big Ten or SEC expand beyond 16
(if at all). The Big East, Southern Conference, and WAC all tried it at different times and failed because at some point a conference gets too large and starts to take on the feel of a confederation. Plus, there will be enough schools who will want to remain in the conference because they are fine if the ACC is no longer a power conference in football. The Big East, Southern, and WAC still exist as a DI conference after they reduced their membership, so I would expect the same to be true for the ACC. Otherwise, where are the basketball-first schools and Notre Dame going to end up? It is unlikely they will end up in the Big Ten, SEC, or the new conference created by the football-first schools.
