Some stunning facts related to Baylor's title game victory
I was looking thru the Wiki on Baylor's win. Couple shockers:
- This is the first team from the state of Texas to win the national title since 1966. And that winner was Texas Western (now known as UTEP).
- Despite their enormous sports budgets, neither Texas nor Texas A&M has ever appeared in the NCAA title game, let alone won it. Houston, Texas Tech, Baylor and UTEP each have more title game appearances than either the Aggies or the Longhorns.
- This was Baylor's 2nd appearance in the title game, but first win. They lost to Kentucky in 1948, in Adolph Rupp's first championship game victory.
- The ACC (by current conference membership) still leads with 17 total championships, narrowly edging the PAC-12, whose teams have 16 championships (11 of which are from UCLA).
- Wisconsin won the 1941 national title lead by... Coach Bud Foster. No, not that Bud Foster.
- In probably the greatest team feat in NCAA basketball history, the 1949-1950 City College of New York (CCNY) Beavers won both the NIT tournament AND the NCAA tournament (beating Bradley in both finals!). In 1971, the NCAA banned teams invited to the NCAA tournament from playing in other postseason tournaments, so we'll never see that achieved again.
