If you really like a kid you can go all-in...
But you run the risk of running out when a potentially better player comes open at that position
For instance...late in the year last year VTs roster was about set and VT took David N'Guessan...a bit later Marcus Santos Silva came open who wouldve been a great fit and likely been open to VT...but VT didnt have scholarships and he picked Tex Tech...a bit later PJ Horne leaves and that spot that couldve been Santos Silva had it happened sooner becomes Mutts
Im not complaining about either Mutts or N'Guessan theyre both positive additions, but the timing of things can take you out of the running for some high end players
So you reach out and see what timeline a kid has and who theyre hearing from and what they are looking for in a school. If its still a good fit, then you try to get them on campus (or virtual tour, or whatever it may be). Then you let them know the reality of your situation and what youre looking for...
"Hey, we have 3 scholarships, we have our eyes on 2 other kids for those 2 spots but we think youd fit great in X role"
Either the kid will commit or he will take other visits
You continue recruiting at whatever level you feel they are worth depending on your board and then go from there
Storm Murphy was a no-brainer from both parties so it happened quickly...others need to get to know VT and MY.
Joe Bamisile already knew Jamion Christian at GW from an earlier recruitment and his high school coach's familiarity. So that one got done quick.
