In close games, regardless whether they are an offensive shootout

or a defensive dual, fans give majority of the credit for a close win to whichever unit was last on the field and had direct control on the outcome. Just think of all the games where fans said "the defense won the game today," "the defense saved the offense's butt today," or something to that effect. Likewise, the same thing happened when the offense had the amazing game winning drive to beat Nebraska at home. Fans were talking about the last unit on the field that decided the outcome of the game instead of giving equal praise to both units. If 1 unit can receive majority of the credit/praise for a win, then it is only fair that 1 unit can receive majority of the blame for a loss.
