He's more focused on the academic side -- that's the real cash cow.
The university's endowment is like $1.2 BILLION -- and that's small compared to other universities. A measly $100M in revenue for the athletic department is a pittance.
The richest universities in the country are mostly elite academic institutions (e.g., Ivy League) or they are excellent and large public academic institutions (e.g., Michigan, University of Texas system).
Many of these institutions spend $1B a year in research expenditures. Football is child's play compared to the real cash cow of universities. Let's be real. People want more investment in football because they like football and they want VT to be successful at it. It has nothing to do with funding other sports or being a profit generator for the athletic department or university.
Football is going the way of the Dodo bird. It's just a matter of time. I'm glad Sands isn't a rube who thinks football is our ticket to success. It was a nice springboard 20 years ago -- but we're beyond that stage of our development as a university now.
