NCAAT and the 2021 Season

Seedings:

Seedings were all over the map because of Covid. Griffith was a HODGE trophy finalist last year and has only lost one match in his entire career for crying out loud. No way is he the 8th seed. Parco, on what planet is he the 17th seed?...that is crazy. McKee lost to Latona and then went on an epic backside run to finish 3rd....I could go on.

So, I don't think you should judge our guys' performances by their seeds.

Our Guys:

Latona - showed there is no quit in him and finished 6th while beating the guy who ended up 3rd. Throw in the dramatic win over Camacho in the NCS dual and he had an incredible freshman campaign. I see him being a top 10 133 pounder next year.

Korbin - Awesome season and tournament. 'Nuff said. A true warrior poet and a credit to Virginia Tech.

Andonian - Most exciting wrestler on the planet, but he doesn't quite look the part of a 149 pounder to me. Mauller lifted him a mile in the air on his takedowns. Could he go down to 141?

Brady - he is on the cusp...he wrestled tough...I expect big things from him next year.

Mekhi - the heart of a champion...can't wait to see him destroy folks next year on his way to the top of the podium as a healthy 165 pounder....I don't quite see him at 174, though.

Bolen - He just looked so tired at the end against Keckeisen. Did not see the loss vs. Geer (Okie State) but obviously did well when he was fresh against DePrez for 7th. He beat the #2 seed and the #3 seed on the year. He's a hoss and might have the frame for 197 so maybe he goes up a weight next year. One thing I know is 184 is going to be loaded next year as Hidlay, Keckeisen, Brooks are all young and returning.

Junkyard Dog - took his lumps but he will learn from them...Now he knows the path to be the 174 pounder next year.

Catka - He looks too big to make 197, but looks a little on the small side for a Heavyweight...

ACC Wrestlers:

O'Connor made the most of his opportunities and held on to stand atop the podium! Great Work! Very happy to see that.

Kudos to Trent Hidlay who had a great season and was robbed blind in the final...either they award the takedown or hit Brooks with two stalling penalties or both. You'll never convince me otherwise.

I don't know much about Wentzel personally but he wrestled tough and smart all year...I'd love for our guys to learn to ride, scout, and gameplan like he does. He surely made the most of his senior year.

Congrats to Bonnacorsi who made the most of the bottom half of the 197 bracket getting blown up.

I feel Hayden Hidlay's pain. Tough way to go out.

Louie Hayes (UVA) and Sherman (UNC) wrestled well to make AA. Daniel Bullard AA'd also.

Was glad to see Tariq Wilson shake off the quick whistle against Eierman and major his way to 3rd place.

Finally, kudos to Finesilver who despite getting pinned by Andonian (again) went on to win 3 matches on the backside including pinning Lovett #5 seed.

Other Things:

Felt like Penn State 'won' the tournament with the 4 champions. Crazy to think you can finish 2nd with 4 champions.

Cannot say enough good things about Shane Griffith....36 sports is outrageous, but Stanford needs to stop with their virtue signaling nonsense and just fund these 11 sports and be done with it. He's a Jersey boy, but I just don't see him coming back east to wrestle next year... I wouldn't trade Palo Alto for Happy Valley, Princeton, Ames, or Cornell.

Gable Steveson vs. Kyle Snyder - I would pay $1000 to see that match. My money is on Steveson after watching that backflip!

Spencer Lee - I just did not like the interview with him. Something off-putting about him.

Regarding your last comment, yes, very off-putting. -- VTraised 03/23/2021 3:30PM
