In the late innings, down 5 runs you need base runners any way you can get

them. If you are down 1 run and you think the batter can hit it over the fence it is not nearly as bad, but they needed 5 to tie, and you don't swing at a 3-0 pitch when the pitcher has not shown he can throw it over the plate. I have been watching baseball for nearly 70 years, maybe you are new to the sport.
