I retired early from Tech, partly because of Sands. The posters here ...

are correct. He cares about research. He is increasing enrollment to bring in more money to support research, which I think is unethical. Just before I retired my undergraduate classes were about 30% foreign students. Guess what, they pay out of state tuition. Foreign students are targeted because they are talented and will not lower average SAT of freshman class, etc. When Covid hit, students from foreign countries could not get into the US and the director of admissions said that Tech offered a number of in-state students that would normally not get offers, so the money would keep rolling in.
This all short sighted. When Tech needs to be building a loyal and committed alumni base for it’s long term health, it is building an undergraduate student body with little or no affiliation with the university except a degree. Tech is looking more and more like Purdue, a weak sister in the Big 10,. Of course, Sands is from Purdue.
