Even if the "long term structural and culture issues surrounding

the fundraising/development operations of the athletic department" is "fixed," then is it wise to assume that will change VT's position in college football world or has VT crossed the point of no return and solidified its position in the college football world?

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with making changes and letting the chips fall where they may. However, the majority of the fan base may believe that if VT makes the necessary changes, then VT could close the gap to the blue bloods. If things don't work out that way because the gap is too large to overcome, then how will the fan base react to the idea that all the changes made were for naught? Would the fan base see VT as throwing money down the football drain when it could have been using that valuable resource in other areas?
