The first shots of the next war have been fired
Content owners creating their own streaming platforms. With that happening, the model where they have tons of channels that are there to fill a slot and get a couple pennies per cable subscriber is going to die and with it, a lot of channels. The current model must die and with it non-stop ads for the same 3 reality trainwrecks on a sister channel. For most entertainment channels there is little value to a scheduled delivery model, people prefer on-demand.
The question is, what will happen to the live sporting event market. That is about the only thing that really has a need for scheduled airing. I think the MLB network model, minus the local blackouts, is the future. The key is finding a way to deliver local advertising to the viewer, but comp the broadcasting network for a piece of the revenue.
