Given that the Atlantic Hockey and Hockey East (which includes BC)

both have 11 members, either one could be a home for VT's men's team. The Big Ten currently has 8 members, so that may be a possibility since the ACC currently doesn't sponsor the sport. It is worth noting that AL-Huntsville gave up its Independent status to join the WCHA. While Arizona State and Long Island are currently the only Independent teams.

Finding a home for the women's team may be a little more challenging since fewer schools sponsor the sport at the DI level. The College Hockey America may be VT's best bet since it only has 6 members including Penn State and Syracuse. The New England Women's Hockey Alliance currently has 6 (7 in 2022), but the conference may be unwilling to add a member outside the region. The Western Collegiate Hockey Association may be another option since it only has 7 teams with all the members being located in either MI (5), WI (1), or OH (1). Currently there are no teams competing as an Independent.
