To bolster your claim about cable companies and their obsolescence...
we recently moved into our house, new construction, and we're a couple of hundred feet off of a busy road in Forest, VA. The neighbors across the dirt road have Shentel, who serves as the only cable and internet provider in this area. The neighbors to our back have Shentel as they are on the main road.
We were quoted $4800 to trench a line and hook up to the internet. I'd be really surprised if we were talking about more than 500ft here.
After thinking about it a bit, we talked to a Shentel representative (one of the many) and after some conversation their take was "I wouldn't do it if I were you...I'm not even sure Shentel will be around in 5 years. The low orbit satellites are where this thing is heading and I just couldn't justify spending that much when you'll be able to get just as good a product in a couple of years."
I think they know where most of this is headed and that it'll take some acts of congress, literally, to prevent it.
