Honestly, I could go either way. I am 43 and I don't think
I will ever see Notre Dame football join a conference on a permanent basis. Honestly, I thought was going to remain in the Big East with the other Catholic schools and I guess it could still happen in the future. It would depend on how big of a player the Big East is because I think it is still viewed as a "power conference" in basketball. I am not sure about the other sports it currently sponsors. If Notre Dame wants to remain Independent in football, have an East Coast presence, and be a member of a power conference for the other sports, then the Big East may still fit that profile in 2036.
Something else to consider is that the ACC could go through a similar divorce as the WAC (late '90s) and Big East experienced because the conference got too large. In the ACC's case, the football schools may grow tired of the financial gap between the ACC and Top 2-3 conferences (i.e. Big Ten, SEC, and Big XII or Pac-12). If the ACC does split up, then that could influence Notre Dame's decision on which conference(s) it wants to be affiliated going forward.
