Actually no, I did not start with a hypothesis
I only had a question. I wondered if the offense scored more in a particular quarter. Did they do better at the start of a game or after half time or something else?
So I gathered the basic data from box scores. As I was doing that, I noticed that some scores were fumble returns for touchdowns. So it made me curious how many non-offensive scores we had and I added that data in. As I was doing that, I also noticed that some scoring drives were really short. So I dug into the play by play to see if it was a short field from a turnover or special teams play, and I added that data in.
At that point I figured I might as well note if the game was a win or a loss and the opponents. Only at the end did I do any analysis to see if any patterns showed up in the data. In fact, I'd call it more of a data exploration since I wasn't looking for anything in particular. The results are from the data and not in any way biased by me.
