Some additional data
We had 35 short field scores within 22 games over the past three years that fall into the above analysis.
5 scores were D/ST Touchdowns (INT, Fumble return, or kick block)
14 scores were Field Goals (44% of short fields)
8 scores were first half Touchdowns by the offense
- record of 7-0 if TD in Q1,
- record of 0-1 if TD in Q2
8 scores were second half Touchdowns by the offense
- record of 2-0 if TD in Q3,
- record of 2-0 if TD in Q4
And over the last three years, not specific to short fields, just general scoring:
We are 1-4 when we score 0 points in the first quarter.
We are 4-4 when we score 3 points in the first quarter.
We are 3-7 when we score 7 points in the first quarter.
We are 10-2 when we score 10+ points in the first quarter. (7-0 in games when we had a short field score in that Q1, 3-2 when we did not get a Q1 short field score).
Also of note:
If we only got Field Goals from our short field setup, we were 3-4.
If we got only TD from our short fields we were 8-2.
If we got both TD and FG within a game from short fields, we were 5-0.
