Yes, Crazy Guy has. Look into filing a provisional patent to buy some time.


Consult an attorney, but this was his experience.

There are filing fees and if you choose, patent attorney fees, which could save you some time and headaches.

A few caveats, even with a patent, someone else can make it and unless you find them and tell them to stop, you will never know. And that would entail legal fees.

In the medical field, Crazy Guy realized a company may sound interested and would buy the patent and shelve it if it competes with a big product of theirs. So he had to be very careful. In his case, once a big company makes it, it's pretty easy to see if another company is copying it.

If you don't get a patent (if your idea is patentable) someone else can. At least keep meticulous records and notarize everything to establish a time frame.
