As long as the ACC continues with its 8 game conference schedule

I believe the schedule will always be an issue for fans. Given that the ACC no longer uses the football divisions in basketball, it is probably time for the ACC to realign the divisions so everyone (except maybe Pitt and Louisville) are paired up with their "natural pair" for the protected cross-division game. All it would take is for BC and VT to swap divisions so the new pairings could look like this:

Syracuse-BC
VT-UVA

The more tricky issue is whether the ACC increases the number of conference games to either 9 or 10. I prefer increasing the number of games to 10 even though it will create issues for the ACC with SEC rivals when factoring in the required Notre Dame game because the ACC could implement this schedule format

6 division games
1 protected cross-division game
3 rotating cross-division game (remaining 6 teams are divided up into 2 groups of 3 that rotate every 2 years).

By going to this format it will allow teams to play the teams in the other division more frequently and it should eliminate scenarios like what VT experienced this year by having to play only 1 NC schools at home and 3 NC schools away. At least it should allow the ACC to structure the schedule in such a way so every team will split the 2 NC division foes (1 home and 1 away). If done properly, I believe the ACC could use the same format majority of the time for the pairings below.

Syracuse-BC
L'ville-Pitt
VT-UVA
Clemson-GT
FSU-Miami

At least there should be no reason a team has to make 2 trips to the same region/state in the same season regardless if the games are back-to-back or spread out.
