Unless the next HC is a James Franklin-level used car salesman, the
problem won't go away. The problem is not about ONE coach. It's systemic. We've done a poor job of keeping up with regard to facilities and staff. What exactly is this charismatic leader supposed to be selling that can't be just as easily (or more easily) be sold at 30 other programs?
Recruiting is going to come down to a few things. Some of them are fairly materialistic -- do the facilities indicate this is a top-flight program where I can develop and win? Others are going to be based upon relationships -- where do I feel comfortable? Where do I feel like I'll belong?
A single head coach can't run a program and effectively build relationships with hundreds of potential recruits. Clemson, Bama, UGA, Ohio State of TEAMS of young, vibrant, relatable recruiting staff who connect with recruits on social media, text, phone, etc. They can't do in-home visits -- but that's become so much less important these days. We simply don't have the resources to show all these recruits the kind of love and attention other programs can.
Until we build a MUCH bigger recruiting staff, nothing is going to change. It won't matter how charismatic the head man is.
