Advocating a bit of a silly theme here, no?
Expectations...are ok. Same with high standards.
If VT football were to totally tank for instance and we follow your logic, well then, "we're just a bottom of div 1 teams, simply acknowledge it".
Passion's of course allowed for things folks care about.
Fuente was brought in to develop the program..."next step" if you will...primarily to build an offense to compliment a defense that set a standard for years. Perceived results in year 5:
- Limited QB development/performance; a primary Fuente role
- Better offense, but middle of the road-ish; a primary Fuente role
- Meanwhile...defense has tanked, nay has disappeared
- Cultural identity has tanked, nay has almost disappeared
- Recruiting has tanked, nay has almost disappeared
- Fan, alumni, and national audience engagement seems headed south
- Significant team dissension's occurred
- COVD debacles
- Communication's locked down and resulting team insight and fan engagement's gotten locked up with it
- Annnd in the interim we run off and flirt with Baylor
Issues occurring across the spectrum seem to point to an inability to effectively manage the program, at least to a standard we became used to. Loved the Fuente hire, and I think I'd like Fuente the person. But it's seeming like a cultural miss at this point, rightfully or wrongfully; that's a feeling that's been building in the fan base. Given that, a (second) loss that seems primarily due to a VT team looking unprepared and straight out lost at times is going to cause some perfectly reasonable passion to bubble over.
Can he change a trajectory that seems questionable at this point? Hope so. I'd love to see my school and "my" guys succeed. Cheers.
