There you go. It was horrendous
After .500 seasons in year three and year four, there was cautious optimism that year five (1992) would finally be the season Beamerball turned the corner. Beamer had his guys. Maurice DeShazo at qb, Hebron and Kennedy from the backfield. Antonio freeman at er. A stout offensive line was lead by Jim Pyne. The defense was solid with Ty Drakeford leading the DBs
The season opened with an easy win against JMU. The next week, tech loses a heartbreaker at ECU, failing in the 4th quarter as the Pirates rally to a 30-27 win. Week 3, we win at Temple
Week 4 tech travelled to West Virginia. The specifics escape me but despite battling a better ‘eer team touch three quarters, the Hokies left losing 16-7
Week five, tech travelled to Louisville. The Hokies at this point we’re big East members. L-Ville has been a longtime nemesis. The cards were a top level basketball school that fought hard to keep football out of the metro conference. So given finally having a football home and l-vile not caring about football, it should have been a tech win. But somehow l-vile rallies in the fourth quarter to a 21-17 win leaving tech 2-3
Week six, tech hosted ACC member #21 NC State in Blacksburg. Tech defense played a great game limiting the pack to two field goals and a 13-6 lead entering the fourth quarter. Nc state ties the game in the 4th quarter ending the game 13-13 and the Hokies 2-3-1. Could this be a bowl team?
The next week, #1 Miami crushes tech
Week 8, tech travelled to Piscataway NJ to face new big East foe rutgers. The game was back forth. I was there in the far end zone along with about 30000 fans. With two minutes left tech went up 49-44. It seemed safe to believe the Hokies would run their record to 3-3-1. Then the tech kickoff sailed out of bounds and Rutgers started at the 35. Little stabs to the soul rutgers move down the field in seven or eight yard increments. With seconds left, rutgers had 4th and goal on the eight yard line. This is rutgers. They are not worthy. We are Virginia tech. I was sitting in the corner of the end zone with my fam, safely distanced from rutgers fans. It was Halloween, about four in the afternoon. With a roar of the mealy crowd, the snap, the crash of the pads, happening in slow motion, the rutgers qb sees his man, lofts the ball to the corner of the end zone, touchdown, scarlet knights. Hokies lose fall to 2-5-1
Next week, tech loses to #10 cuse
Week 10 the Hokies lose another 4th quarter lead and game to southern miss
Finally, week 11, UVa game. Tech plays well at times but loses another 4th quarter lead and falls 41-38
So yes, as Bruno said, they did force Beamer to make some staff changes. But being a fan through those years gives one thicker skin to handle a wake loss
We’ll be alright
