Think of it this way, it's his redshirt senior season

He came in hot, has cooled down, shown some improvement, but hasn't shown much of what we hoped for in November/December 2015.

*Is the offense improved since the Beamer years? There's definitely been an upgrade in talent both at the skill position positions and definitely along the line. The playcalling leaves something to be desired which means the net effect is an improved offense, but not one that seems to be meeting its potential.

*Is he the QB whisperer we thought? Jerod Evans was talented and Fuente/Cornelson probably made him look even more so. JJ played well for a redshirt freshman until he hit a well. It's been a mixed bag then.

*Has recruiting improved from the end of the Beamer era? Obviously it's hard to know until years after the fact, but that would not seem to be the case right now. #76 followed up the #41st class would seem to be a regression. One of my favorite Christmas Day activities of yesteryear was looking at the RT's state rankings to see how many we've nabbed vis a vis UVa. Sufficed to say that's no longer necessary.

*How's his coaching staff? I give him credit here for his willingness to make changes, even if they don't work out. He is trying to improve.

All of this to say is that we are is something of a comfortable football purgatory. Many programs admire us for our general consistency, but we'll unlikely to see the promised land under Fuente.

And, sad to say, we'll probably be having this same conversation in 2022.
