Therein lies the dilemma. He will never do poorly enough

to warrant a buyout and he will never do well enough to for everyone to feel content.

This feels like our ceiling as a program. Given his recruiting and player development patterns over the last five years, it's hard to see how he will be able to do more in the future. This is an experienced and talented team with his coaching staff in place, so I'm not sure what might change in the future.

Conversely, if you assume that 2018 was our basement then it wasn't horrible. Six wins and a bowl appearance would be a heck of a down season for most programs, even if it was an extremely excruciating experience for us.

All of this to say that we are probably going to be in football purgatory the next few years. Neither bad enough to make any wholesale changes or good to enough to compete for division titles consistently.
