Coaches made a HUGE mistake on saturday...

While the nuances of X's and O's escape me, clock management does not. It was one of Beamer's biggest liability, and while Fuentes manages it much better he still comes up short of the better coaches out there.

Clock management is one of those things some coaches don't truly understand, and sadly it is an unrecognized liability - meaning they don't even realize they are bad at it - hence why it doesn't improve.

Saturday is a clear example, and I was frustrated as it was unfolding. We have all 3 time outs, and we're snapping the ball with plenty of time on the clock in our last possession before the half.
On 3rd and 4 from the UNC 43 with about 1:50 left, it is an obvious run play... as you have essentially 2 downs to the yardage, and you can bleed the clock down to about 55 seconds if you fail to pick up the 3rd down... meaning you can much more safely go for it on 4th down knowing UNC has little time (as they only had 1 time out).

While we may have failed to score even if we ran the ball, we gifted them 7 points.

Now, we did get an extra possession with the onside kick (brilliantly executed), but to win at the highest level a coach needs to maximize every opportunity. There is too fine a line in college football to leave it up to bounces, refs, or spectacular plays.
