It's not even as much about science as it is about risk, optics, and

Litigation.

For starters, these players are officially amateurs. It has already been declared that they can opt out of the season and keep their scholarships. Players are already starting to opt out. That list is going to grow. Then you have what's going on in the Pac 12 and Big 10.

You have a player at Indiana who has gotten sick. Not just testing positive, but very sick and he's experiencing complications. What happens if he (or anyone else) dies?

On top of that, you have local and state mandates, some of which football games do not comply.

As for the science, you have linemen who are basically breathing on each other every play over and over. Yes, if a player gets it, it's highly likely that he'll be fine. Its a near certainty for each individual that they will live. But we're dealing in large numbers here. Given a sample size if 10,000 players, even if there's a a 1-10000 chance of the virus killing an individual, you're still likely looking at one direct death. Then you have coaches, trainers, equipment staff, etc. The players are not in any kind of bubble and could spread the virus to the community. They could spread it to their family. Their family can spread it to others. And it all traces back to a compulsion to play a game Because lots of money is involved.

And if people in the community getting sick can get traced back to a large money operation like college sports. Oh boy the lawsuits will be flying.

The science says that playing is perhaps only adding modest risk. But it's the other factors that will shut the sport down.

I think the NFL will kick the tires on playing though.
