For new vehicles . . . I've used this process twice successfully

1. Decide on the exact make, model and extras (trim package) you want.
2. Get the "internet sales" email address for all dealers within a reasonble distance for that make (get at least 3 - likely 1 or more will ignore your email)
3. Send one email to all asking for the best "out the door" price and color options.
4. Use the responses to get the color you want at the best price.
4a: My preferred negotiation line is "I want to buy from you, can you match or beat XXXdealers price?"

I got 18% and 20% off MSRP twice this way.

example:

Sales Manager,
I am going to purchase a 2020 Honda Passort EX-L in the next 30 days. I have no color preferences. Please send me your best "out the door" price for a cash purchase and include available color options. No trade in.

--- If you are purchasing with cash, just say you are anyway and let them sell you on financing or tell them after you reach the price agreement you changed your mind and will be financing with XXXbank/credit union/etc. Same for trade-in, do it after you get the best price.
