I put two makers against each other.
Done it with Honda/Toyota and Audi/BMW. That way they can't know what ballpark I'm looking at. I say I don't really care which one it is because I like them both. They ask me what other dealer (same brand) I'm working with. I say I'm not. If I buy a Honda it's from you. I just want the best deal. And I might have a slight preference over which one, but I don't tell them and TBH it's not enough to walk away from a better deal at the other brand. I just matter of factly say I don't care. I'm a financial controller for a living so it's how I PERCEIVE what the best deal is. Sorry, can't give you specifics about it, I just have to feel it. Not married to either brand.
I negotiate the best price that I think I can get and then tell them I'm on the fence. BUT, if you throw in the roof racks, upgraded mats, or some other feature that I want, then it's a done deal. I tell them I have a check from my credit union with me.
On a side note, I ALWAYS ask about the mats after I got burned once. I went to pick up the car and the mats were cheapy ones. What happened to the mats that were in the other car? "Oh, those were UPGRADED mats. They will be an additional $500. Do you want them?" No I don't, you m-fer.
