1987 13-14 loss at uva

In 1987, the game against the hoos was Beamer’s second game as the head coach at tech. The hoos were 0-2 with road losses at #20 Georgia and at Maryland. The Hokies had lost their opener at home against #10 Clemson.

Beamer’s depleted team played the wahoos tough but game up short. I listened to the game on my radio in shanks hall. The key comment from the announcers was “Virginia tech is a nice school, but they’ll never be an ACC program”.

I didn’t believe them

The 1987 season ended with what was one of the coldest moments in Blacksburg history. The night before the Cincinnati game (the Friday before thanksgiving) it snowed six+ inches of snow.

About 10000 fans gathered in a snow filled lane stadium to watch the 1-9 Hokies take on the 4-6 bearcats. Tech won 21-20 I believe due to a missed bearcat extra point. It was just plain freezing that day but I made my parents stay for the entire game (heck I spent my own 20 bucks to get my parents tickets)
