Impacts of COVID-19...

Let this thread serve as a discussion for some of the impacts a missed/altered/shortened season might have. If your stance is that the season will happen no matter what, please feel free to let this thread pass you by, I'm not entertaining responses of that nature in this thread.

Sowith that said, here are a few consequences/things to ponder with an altered season.

1) Higher rate of transfers

Not because of what some might think in that players would be looking for a better opportunity to play. That happens so few times it is almost negligible.

That bigger reason for an overwhelming majority of transfers is a missed evaluation. For some kids, their first practice on college campus is one of a handful of times a coaching staff has seen them live. This is due to the NCAA trying to crack down on recruiting violations by making recruits exposure to college staffs minimal. Shortened evaluation periods. Limited number of visits a player can take. These are all things that decrease the likelihood of a good evaluation and a good fit.

With as little of time as coaches have currently to find someone and determine a good fit, imagine that time getting even smaller to the point where I would bet more than a handful of players will make their way to a college campus without the head coach ever seeing them live.

Very very tough to make a good evaluation under those circumstances.

2) Where are these seniors going?

There will be a trickle down effect of sorts, and this will have an affect somewhat on the numbers above as well.

If the season is cancelled, the NCAA will have to make a determination on the eligibility of its athletes. If we can use spring sports as a guide, then the likely choice is for the NCAA to grant everyone an extra year of eligibility but keep the scholarship limits the same (i.e. 13 schollies per team).

So do you bring back Wabissa Bede? Or let him spend a grad year elsewhere like PJ Horne, or just flat out tell him it isnt working like Isaiah Wilkins. Or do you bring him back for 1 year, when the talented freshman class behind him is 3 (2 and a sorta) years into the system, nullifying somewhat what he brought to the tableveteran leadership.

I think you almost certainly bring back Diarra, unless he decides to call it a career and take a G-League contract or play overseas. Pemsl would likely be gone.

Bede and Pemsl can both playsomewhere. And theyll help someone out. But honestly a missed season and a free redshirt for VTs 8 Freshmen and Sophomores would be the biggest gift ever given to the basketball program. How many other teams will have 4 5th year seniors, 3 4th year juniors (likely minus Bamisile) and 1 6th year senior (Radford)?

I will take those players against any team of one-and-dones...

If you have 5 (6 if Bamisile is gone) scholarships to play with during that time, you want at least 3 (4 if Bamisile is gone) to be younger than the group above, and 2 grad transfers max.

If VT takes 2-3 in this class, that sets their roster up perfectly for a run in 2022-2023.

No VT basketball this season will be a bummer, for sure. I promise you I miss basketball more than anyone. But, this could be a very good thing for the program overall if VT leans into it.
