My hunch is the ACC would have gone to 3 or 4 Pods a while ago, but wasn't granted the right to hold a championship game if there weren't exactly 2 divisions. The window opened when the Big 12 wanted to have a championship game without any divisions, but unfortunately the Big10 and SEC allowed only that exception. I would have thought the ACC could have "faked" it by creating 4 "pods" and rotating it to always have 2 divisions, but that never materialized.

Assuming Penn State and Texas are not options, I would love to see something like this:

POD A: ND, PITT, SYR, BC
POD B: WVU, UVA, VT, LOUISVILLE
POD C: UNC, NCSU, DUKE, CLEMSON
POD D: Wake, FSU, MIAMI, GT

Playing WVU, UVA and Louisville seems regionally correct. Each team can have 2 additional permanent rivals, such as:

* VT could have MIAMI and PITT
* WVU could have PITT and SYR
* UVA could have UNC and DUKE

Now that's 5 really good games each year for VT, and that leaves 10 teams, where each remaining team can be rotated every other year. That means VT plays FSU twice every four years, as well as Clemson every four years.

This all just makes too much sense and I think the ACC should push the Power 5 very hard on this now while the window is open.
