I may end up being wrong but this is a naive take IMO


Usually jobs like this are only "retired" from for 1 of 2 reasons:
1. Forced to - scandal, health, pushed out, etc. Not usually much you can do, just leave as gracefully as you can. Since there is nothing out there about him right now (other than his enabling behavior toward UNC), I will discount this possibility.
2. The replacement is already in the pipeline - guys like this don't just leave and on the day they hand in their notice, a job search is begun. Usually they leave because they have trained and succession planned for someone to take their place. Whatever anyone thinks about Swofford, I don't believe for a second he is leaving now to have someone new come in and change the direction of what he feels he has built. More than likely any second in command would be someone within the ACC structure already.
Look at the last transitions with the NFL and NBA. This is normally how it is handled. Hoping for someone outside the current power structure is misplaced I believe.
