Agree, except for the "people can protect themselves from others" part
I find that folks who go into business right now, where masks are required except for a couple of minor exceptions, without masks, are extremely selfish and contribute to the problem a great deal. They also contribute to peoples fears.
Just today I read of a barista that refused service to one without a mask. The offending customer posted it on FB. Someone started a gofundme for the barista hoping they would get $500/$1000 for them. It's currently at $17,000. It's the inconsiderate and selfish pricks that do not care about others that many worry about. And they can't be avoided.
