Well, we're talking about America here
I say this as a history major who owns probably 250+ books and who has learned way more about history since I graduated than I did in high school or college, but America is absolutely awful about warping history to fit our own narrative, so we can 'Murica the hell out of society. I don't think that was always the intent, but I think that's what has happened over the years.
For example, I've seen the Facebook post going around comparing cops killing citizens to the evil, oppressive British killing innocent civilians at the Boston Massacre. Of course what we don't bother to teach is the fact that it was a drunken, disorderly mob that had just left the taverns at last call who surrounded a British sentry and went after him, and of course he called for backup. We also don't bother to teach the fact that it was John Adams, a Son of Liberty future President of the United States, who represented the accused British soldiers at their impending trial because they really didn't do much wrong...they just got accosted by a bunch of drunks who outnumbered them probably 10 to 1.
As somebody who is extremely well-read in history, I find it rather sad the falsehoods that I was taught in the American school system. And I see grownups offer opinions based on false historic information all the time.
We can tear down or build as many statues and monuments as we want, but your average American isn't really interested in history anyway unless it fits his/her own narrative.
Personally I'd rather see history not taught at all than taught incorrectly. [Post edited by Chris Coleman at 06/05/2020 1:07PM]
